The James Madison Dukes are gearing up for an exciting 2024 football season, following an impressive 11-2 record in 2023, which marked only their second season in the FBS. The Dukes also celebrated their first-ever bowl game appearance at the Armed Forces Bowl.
New Leadership
The offseason saw significant changes in the coaching staff. The Dukes lost their head coach and most of the coaching staff to Indiana. However, they brought in Bob Chesney, the former head coach of Holy Cross, known for his successful track record across various divisions. Joining Chesney is offensive coordinator Dean Kennedy, also from Holy Cross. Chesney’s arrival marks his first time taking over a winning program with strong resources and facilities, setting high expectations for the upcoming season.
Offensive Strategy
Under Chesney and Kennedy, the offense might see a balanced approach between run and pass plays. Dylan Morris, a transfer from Washington, is likely to be the starting quarterback. Morris brings experience and has shown promise, making him the frontrunner to lead the team. The backup quarterback position will likely go to Alonza Barnett III, who brings a different style of play, adding versatility to the team’s offensive strategies.
Running Game
The running back room has been revamped through the transfer portal. The Dukes brought in Ayo Adeyi from North Texas, a 1,000-yard rusher, George Pettaway from North Carolina, and Tyler Purdy from Holy Cross. This trio showed promise during spring practice, and the team is expected to use a committee approach to leverage their diverse skills. Adeyi’s experience and Pettaway’s speed are expected to be key assets.
Receiving Corps
The wide receiver group will look different this year after losing key players like Elijah Sarrat and Reggie Brown. Returning players include Taji Hudson, Yamir Knight, and Omarion Dollison, along with newcomers Cam Ross from UConn. These players will need to step up to fill the void and support Morris in the passing game.
Tight End and Offensive Line
The tight end position might see more involvement in blocking schemes under the new coaching staff. Key players include Kyi Wright, a sizable presence, and Taylor Thompson, a capable pass-catcher. The offensive line remains largely intact, losing only two starters from last year. The experienced unit is expected to provide strong protection and support the running game.
Key Players to Watch
- Dylan Morris: The Washington transfer has the potential to be one of the better quarterbacks in the Sun Belt, given his past performance and experience.
- George Pettaway: The North Carolina transfer could emerge as a breakout player with his impressive speed and playmaking ability.
As the Dukes prepare for their season opener against Charlotte, they aim to build on last year’s success despite the significant changes in the coaching staff and player lineup. The blend of experienced transfers and returning talent sets the stage for another competitive season for James Madison.
