The Memphis Tigers, who ended the 2023 season with a 10-3 record and a Liberty Bowl victory over Iowa State, are gearing up for another exciting year. After wrapping up their 2024 spring practices on April 20th, the team is set to make waves in the upcoming season.
Quarterback Seth Henigan Returns
A major highlight for the Tigers is the return of their star quarterback, Seth Henigan. Henigan, who has been with the team since 2021, decided to come back for his fourth year, a rarity in modern college football. As Memphis’ all-time leading passer, Henigan’s decision to stay is monumental for the team’s offensive strategy. Despite dealing with injuries last season, Henigan demonstrated resilience and skill, particularly in the latter half of the year. His leadership and experience will be pivotal as the Tigers aim for success in 2024.
New Faces in the Quarterback Room
Backing up Henigan is early enrollee freshman Arrington Maiden. At just 17 years old, Maiden has already impressed coaches with his strong arm and understanding of the game. While he’s not expected to start this season, Maiden could be a significant player for the Tigers in the future, potentially stepping into a starting role next year.
Running Back Mario Anderson Leads the Ground Game
The running back room has undergone some changes with the departure of Blake Watson, who signed a contract with the Denver Broncos. Stepping into the spotlight is grad transfer Mario Anderson from South Carolina, who led his previous team in rushing last year. Anderson’s decision to join Memphis, despite interest from USC and Oklahoma, is a testament to the program’s growing reputation. Anderson is expected to be the main workhorse for the Tigers, bringing his experience and skill to the backfield.
Depth in the Running Back Position
Behind Anderson, the Tigers have solid depth with returning players Sutton Smith and Brandon Thomas. Smith is known for his explosive plays and versatility, while Thomas, who served as a goal-line specialist last season, will likely continue in that role. The addition of Greg Desrosiers Jr. from UMass adds further depth and potential for creative offensive schemes.
Strong Receiving Corps
Memphis’ wide receiving corps is one of the strongest units on the team. Leading the group is Roc Taylor, who had a breakout season last year and is considered one of the top receivers in the AAC. Alongside him is Demeer Blankumsee, who made significant contributions as a transfer last year. The Tigers also brought in transfers Ja’Koby Banks from Houston and Jyaire Shorter from Auburn (formerly North Texas), both of whom are expected to play significant roles.
Emerging Talent at Wide Receiver
One of the most exciting additions is Keonde Henry, a highly-ranked four-star recruit. Although he didn’t participate in spring practices, Henry’s arrival in the summer is highly anticipated. With his talent, he has the potential to make an immediate impact, adding another layer of depth to an already talented receiving unit.
Tight Ends and Red Zone Efficiency
The tight end position remains crucial for the Tigers, especially in third-down and red-zone situations. Anthony Landphere, the starting tight end, is set to play a significant role this season. His development over the years has been impressive, and he will be a key target for Henigan in crucial moments.
Looking Ahead
With a solid mix of returning stars and promising new talent, the Memphis Tigers are poised for another strong season. The leadership of Seth Henigan, the addition of Mario Anderson, and the depth in the receiving corps provide a solid foundation for the team. As they prepare for the challenges ahead, the Tigers aim to build on their previous success and make a significant impact in the AAC and beyond.
