As the Akron Zips aim to rebound from a challenging 2-10 season in 2023, we delve into their spring practice developments and expectations for the upcoming season. Joining us to provide insights is Logan Congrove, Sports Director at WZIP Z88 Sports. Congrove, also the social media coordinator for Walsh Jesuit Women’s Soccer and Akron City FC, shared his thoughts on the Zips’ preparations and key players to watch.
Renewed Determination and Coaching Changes
Head coach Joe Moorhead has been working to instill a “win now” mentality within the team, bringing in new coaches and emphasizing rigorous offseason workouts. The team’s practices have been visible to the public, showcasing their commitment to turning things around in 2024. The Zips are optimistic that these changes will translate into more victories this season.
Quarterback Competition
The quarterback position, crucial for the Zips’ offensive success, is currently a battle between returning player Tahj Bullock and newcomer Ben Finley from California. Bullock, known for his mobility, contrasts with Finley’s more traditional pocket-passer style. According to Congrove, the competition remains wide open and could be decided just before the season opener.
Revamped Running Game
The Zips’ running game faced its own set of challenges in 2023. With the departure of leading rusher Lorenzo Lingard and Drake Jackson, the focus shifts to returners Charles Kellom and Blake Hester, along with newcomers Jordan Simmons from Michigan State and Marquese Williams from Minnesota. Simmons, who has been getting the most reps in spring practice, is expected to lead the running back group, with Kellom providing substantial support.
Wide Receiver Outlook
The wide receiver unit needs to replace significant lost production from 2023, with key players like Jasaiah Gathings and Daniel George no longer on the roster. However, the return of Alex Adams, Bobby Golden, Adrian Norton, and Myles Walker offers hope. Norton, in particular, has emerged as a primary target and is poised for a breakout season, especially if Adams, who has been dealing with health issues, is not at full strength.
Tight End Utilization
The tight ends were not heavily featured in the Zips’ offense last year, and Congrove doesn’t expect that to change significantly under Moorhead’s system. With TJ Banks graduating, Jake Newell is likely to lead the tight end group, bringing experience and trust from the coaching staff.
Offensive Line Changes
The Zips face significant changes on the offensive line, losing three starters and several key backups. To address these gaps, Akron brought in transfers like Eli Fields, who is expected to be a strong contributor. Despite these additions, the offensive line remains a work in progress, as indicated by the controlled practice format of their spring game, which focused on player safety rather than full-scale competition.
Player to Watch: Adrian Norton
With uncertainty surrounding Alex Adams’ health, Adrian Norton is poised to be a standout player for the Zips in 2024. Known for his speed and agility, Norton plays primarily in the slot and has shown promise during spring practices. Regardless of who wins the starting quarterback position, Norton is expected to be a key offensive weapon.
As Akron heads into the new season, the combination of new coaching strategies, key player returns, and promising newcomers offers a hopeful outlook. The Zips are determined to improve upon their previous performances and make significant strides in 2024. Fans and analysts will be closely watching to see how these changes play out on the field.
