The Central Michigan Chippewas wrapped up their 2024 spring practice on April 13, looking to build on a 5-7 season from 2023. We sat down with Adam Jaksa, the voice of the Chippewas, to get insights into the team’s preparations and expectations for the upcoming season.
Adjustments in Coaching Staff
The Chippewas enter the new season with some notable changes in their coaching staff. Following the resignation of offensive coordinator Paul Petrino, head coach Jim McElwain is expected to take on additional responsibilities, including play-calling duties. Jaksa notes that McElwain, an offensive-minded coach, will likely maintain a collaborative approach, working closely with quarterback coach Jake Kostner and newly appointed wide receivers coach, Coach Sherman.
Quarterback Competition Heats Up
Central Michigan will have a new starting quarterback in 2024, with last year’s starter, Jase Bauer, transferring to Sam Houston. The competition is wide open between Bert Emanuel Jr., who has started a few games over the past two years, and Iowa transfer Joe Labas. Emanuel Jr., known for his athleticism, needs to improve his consistency as a passer, while Labas brings depth and experience to the position.
Jaksa emphasizes that head coach McElwain will keep the competition tight-lipped until the start of the season, ensuring that the best player emerges through fall camp. Early enrollee Jaden Glasser also showed promise during spring practice, adding another layer to the competition.
Running Game Strength
The Chippewas’ running game, led by returning players Marion Lukes, Myles Bailey, and BJ Harris, looks to be a strong point for the team. Lukes had a breakout end to the 2023 season, and Jaksa believes both he and Bailey are capable of being 1,000-yard rushers. The key to their success, however, will be the performance of the offensive line, which has struggled in recent years.
Revamped Offensive Line
The offensive line sees significant changes with the loss of starters Keegan Smith and Deiyantei Powell-Woods, as well as key backup Cade Klimczak. Returning starters Brayden Swartout, Dominique Sergpelia III, and Davin Heinzen will need to step up. Newcomers Jemeil Jackson from Fort Valley State and Luis Martinez from West Liberty University add depth and experience to the line. Jaksa stresses the importance of the line’s cohesion and ability to return to the physical, dominating play that has historically defined Central Michigan football.
Talented Receiving Corps
Central Michigan returns a strong group of wide receivers, including Tyson David, Jesse Prewitt III, Chris Parker, and Stephan Bracey Jr. Parker, in particular, has shown the potential for a breakout season. Bracey, who struggled with injuries last year, is expected to be a key deep threat, adding a new dimension to the passing game.
Tight End Utilization
The tight end position, which saw limited use in the passing game last season, could see increased involvement in 2024. DeCorian Temple, who showed flashes of potential last year, returns as a key player. Jaksa mentions that Temple, along with Jacob Kaminski, could provide valuable contributions, especially in blocking schemes, which are crucial for the Chippewas’ run-heavy offense.
Spring Practice Insights
The decision not to hold a formal spring game, due to injuries and depth concerns, focused the team on smaller scrimmages and drills. Jaksa explains that while a spring game can help with team cohesion, the primary goal is to develop technique and chemistry, which can also be achieved through intensive practice sessions.
Player to Watch: Chris Parker
Jaksa highlights Chris Parker as a player poised for a breakout season. With his athleticism and playmaking ability, Parker has the potential to become a key target in the Chippewas’ offense. Success, however, will depend on the entire offense’s ability to function cohesively, from the offensive line providing protection to the quarterback delivering accurate passes.
Looking Ahead
With a mix of returning talent and new additions, Central Michigan aims to bounce back from a challenging 2023 season. The Chippewas’ success will hinge on the development of their quarterback situation, the performance of the offensive line, and the continued growth of their skill players. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely as the team progresses through fall camp and prepares for the 2024 season kickoff.
