The Kent State Golden Flashes are looking to turn the page on a difficult 2023 season, where they finished with a 1-11 record. With spring practices wrapped up and the spring game completed on April 27, the team is poised for a fresh start under a revamped coaching staff and new offensive schemes. We caught up with Gabe Collura, Sports Director at TV2KSU, to discuss the changes and what fans can expect in the upcoming season.
Revamped Coaching Staff
One of the most significant changes for Kent State is the overhaul of their coaching staff. Mark Watson steps in as the new running backs coach, CJ Robbins takes on the role of linebackers and special teams coordinator, and Kody Morgan assumes the position of defensive coordinator after Dave Duggan departed for a high school head coaching job in Mississippi. Morgan brings a wealth of experience, having coached at North Dakota State during their championship runs.
Offensive Overhaul Under Mark Carney
Mark Carney, previously the tight ends coach, has been promoted to offensive coordinator. Carney plans to introduce more varied tempos and increased motion on every play, deviating slightly from the rapid, RPO-heavy approach of former head coach Sean Lewis. This new strategy aims to keep defenses guessing and enhance offensive efficiency.
Quarterback Competition
The quarterback position is highly competitive heading into the new season. Tommy Ulatowski, who started three games in 2023, appears to be the front-runner. Newcomer J.D. Sherrod from Troy showed potential in the spring game, while Devin Kargman and Dru DeShields add depth to the roster. DeShields is still recovering from an injury but remains a promising option.
Strengthened Running Game
The running game is expected to be a focal point of the offense, led by returning rusher Gavin Garcia. Xavier Williams and Curtis Douglas will provide additional support, but the standout is Ky Thomas, a transfer from Minnesota. Thomas is anticipated to be the leading back, bringing explosive playmaking ability and excellent vision. Garcia and Williams will complement Thomas, offering versatility and depth.
Emerging Receiving Corps
The receiving unit looks promising with the return of Chrishon McCray, who had a strong showing in the spring game following his injury-shortened 2023 season. New additions Stanley King, a 6’6″ receiver, and Sebastian Brown from Michigan State add size and talent to the roster. McCray, alongside these new recruits, forms a formidable receiving corps.
Tight End Utilization
With Carney’s background as a tight ends coach, the position will continue to play a crucial role, primarily in blocking schemes. Hunter Hopperton, a transfer from Rhode Island, is expected to step up following the departures of Keenan Orr and Hayden Junker.
Solid Offensive Line
The offensive line is one of Kent State’s most stable units, returning all five starters from 2023. Led by run game coordinator Matt Limegrover, this group brings size and continuity, essential for executing the revamped offensive schemes. They are poised to provide strong support for the run game, especially with Ky Thomas in the backfield.
Player to Watch
Ky Thomas is poised for a breakout season. After sitting out a year due to transfer rules, he’s ready to prove himself and make a significant impact in 2024.
With a restructured coaching staff and new talent in key positions, the Golden Flashes are optimistic about a turnaround in 2024. Fans will be eager to see how these changes translate on the field as Kent State aims to bounce back from a challenging 2023 season.
