Ryan Day faces another quarterback dilemma at Ohio State, a pivotal decision that could shape the Buckeyes’ upcoming season. In a recent radio show appearance, Coach Day emphasized the significance of the quarterback role, acknowledging its pivotal nature in the team’s performance.
“It’s going to be a huge part of our season is the quarterback play, how well the QB plays. We know that. We know how important the offensive line play is going to be, we know how important the QB play is going to be. We’re not shying away from that, and typically the defense is going to be strong and how well they play late in the season is going to be critical, but it always comes down to the QB.
“In terms of a deadline, I don’t like to do that because this is something where a lot of those guys are working towards it, and I want to make sure we’re doing what’s right by them. But at the same time, too, do what’s right by the team so we’re prepared. The way things worked out last year, it went a couple of games into the season. That’s not ideal, I wouldn’t like to do that again this year.”
Ohio State Football Head Coach Ryan Day
Day highlighted the importance of making the right decision for both the players and the team, aiming for a balanced approach that prioritizes preparation while avoiding undue pressure on the candidates. He also reflected on last year’s timeline for selecting a quarterback, expressing a desire for a smoother process this time around.
In the past, Day has demonstrated prowess in developing quarterbacks like Dwayne Haskins, Justin Fields, and CJ Stroud. However, last season’s challenges with Kyle McCord underscore the pressure on Day to ensure the success of this year’s quarterback selection.
The quarterback position represents the final piece of the puzzle for a roster poised to contend for the national title. With a strengthened roster and top prospects returning, expectations are high for Ohio State. Any failure to capitalize on this potential would raise concerns about coaching effectiveness.
Despite the ongoing evaluation process, signs point to Will Howard taking the helm for the Buckeyes in 2024. Howard’s performance in the spring game showcased his potential to lead the team effectively, with Devin Brown also demonstrating promise as a valuable asset.
While Coach Day’s cautious approach may prolong the decision-making process, fans eagerly anticipate a resolution before the start of the season. The success of Ohio State’s quarterback selection will undoubtedly impact their standing as a top contender in college football.
