The Purdue Boilermakers faced their toughest challenge of the season Friday night, hosting No. 2 Alabama at Mackey Arena. In a raucous atmosphere, the No. 12-ranked Boilermakers rose to the occasion, securing an impressive 87-78 victory and improving to 4-0 on the season.
Trey Kaufman-Renn was the star of the night, delivering a dominant performance with 26 points, eight rebounds, and four assists. Braden Smith and Fletcher Loyer added 17 points each, combining with Kaufman-Renn for 60 points and 16 assists. Their balanced offensive output, complemented by a stout defensive effort, proved too much for the Crimson Tide to handle.
A significant storyline heading into the game was Alabama guard Mark Sears, who torched Purdue in their previous matchup with 35 points and 16 three-point attempts. This time, the Boilermakers adjusted, holding Sears to just 13 points on 5-for-15 shooting. Purdue’s defensive trio of Gicarri Harris, Braden Smith, and Myles Colvin stymied the preseason All-American, limiting his impact in crucial moments.
Alabama (3-1) showcased its potential early but faltered when star center Clifford Omoruyi encountered foul trouble. Omoruyi’s absence during a critical stretch in the second half opened the door for Purdue’s game-changing 13-0 run, punctuated by three consecutive three-pointers from CJ Cox. Omoruyi returned with just over four minutes left but fouled out shortly after, leaving the Crimson Tide without their anchor.
Omoruyi, who finished with a team-high plus-11 in his limited minutes, demonstrated his value, but Alabama must address his foul management to compete at the highest level.
Despite the loss, Alabama saw bright moments from freshman Labaron Philon. Philon provided a crucial spark in the first half, scoring on three consecutive possessions and tallying 10 points, four rebounds, and no turnovers in just 11 minutes before halftime.
While Mark Sears contributed 15 points, his 5-for-15 shooting and four turnovers underlined a challenging night for Alabama’s floor leader. The Crimson Tide will need more consistent production from Sears in high-stakes matchups moving forward.
Purdue’s victory not only solidifies its place among the nation’s elite but also highlights its ability to win with a mix of veteran leadership and emerging talent. The Boilermakers’ defensive adjustments, depth, and offensive firepower position them as a formidable contender this season.
The win is expected to propel Purdue higher in the national rankings, as they continue to build momentum early in the season. Alabama, on the other hand, heads back to the drawing board, seeking answers after its first road test ended in defeat.
