Georgia narrowly escaped an upset bid by Kentucky, edging out a 13-12 victory in a hard-fought SEC matchup on Saturday night. The Bulldogs, heavily favored, struggled offensively, managing just one touchdown in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Carson Beck threw for only 160 yards, his lowest total as a starter, and Georgia’s offense recorded just 4.4 yards per play, the lowest since 2021.
Kentucky’s defense was stellar, holding Georgia to three first-half points and 63 total yards, the lowest under coach Kirby Smart. Deone Walker and the Wildcats’ defensive line disrupted Georgia’s offense all night, but the Bulldogs finally broke through with a 4th-quarter touchdown.
Despite their struggles, Kentucky had a chance to take the lead late. Trailing by one with just over three minutes remaining, the Wildcats punted on 4th-and-8 near midfield, but Georgia controlled the ball until the final seconds, sealing the victory.
Kentucky’s standout performances came from kicker Alex Raynor, who set a school record with a 55-yard field goal and accounted for all 12 of the Wildcats’ points, and running back Demie Sumo-Karngbaye, who rushed for 98 yards. However, Kentucky’s inability to find the end zone cost them a chance at the upset.
The loss drops Kentucky to 1-2 on the season and 0-2 in SEC play, while Georgia extends its winning streak over Kentucky to 15 games. For the Wildcats, the effort was a significant improvement after last week’s blowout loss to South Carolina, giving them a morale boost moving forward.
