Quinn Ewers returned from injury to lead No. 1 Texas to a 34-3 victory over No. 18 Oklahoma in the first Red River Rivalry as SEC foes. Ewers, who missed four weeks due to an abdomen strain, threw for 199 yards, including the go-ahead touchdown, and rushed for another score, helping Texas improve to 6-0 (2-0 SEC). Despite a slow start, Ewers completed 20-of-29 passes and overcame early adversity, including an interception on his first throw. The win marks Texas’ second consecutive dominant Red River performance after their 49-0 victory two years ago.
Quintrevion Wisner added 118 rushing yards and a touchdown for the Longhorns. His fumble near the goal line was recovered in the end zone by teammate Silas Bolden for another score, extending Texas’ lead before halftime. The Longhorns secured a 21-3 advantage at the break and never looked back.
Michael Hawkins Jr., Oklahoma’s true freshman quarterback, faced a tough outing, completing 16-of-24 passes for 120 yards while rushing for just 27 yards on 20 attempts. The Sooners, plagued by injuries to key receivers and a lackluster rushing attack, struggled to generate offense. Oklahoma managed just 225 total yards and their only points came from a 42-yard field goal by Tyler Keltner on their opening drive.
Texas capitalized on defensive takeaways, including a crucial fumble forced by Anthony Hill Jr. that led to a 43-yard touchdown run by Wisner, putting the Longhorns firmly in control.
With this win, Texas extended its series lead over Oklahoma to 64-51-5. The victory also gave the Longhorns possession of the Golden Hat trophy, a coveted symbol of this historic rivalry.
Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian praised his team’s resilience, particularly Ewers’ performance. “We faced some adversity early, but the team rallied together,” Sarkisian said. “Getting the Golden Hat back is a tremendous honor for these guys.”
Next, Texas will face No. 5 Georgia in a crucial SEC matchup, while Oklahoma returns home to host South Carolina.
