When Texas A&M football decided to make a coaching change, they opted for a significant shift in their approach. The Aggies moved away from the high-profile, high-energy style of their past to embrace a more understated, disciplined philosophy under Mike Elko.
In recent years, Texas A&M football has been synonymous with bold moves and big promises. The “SwagCopters” of the Kevin Sumlin era and the highly publicized No. 1 recruiting class of 2022, which ignited a verbal clash between Nick Saban and Jimbo Fisher, characterized the program’s flair. However, despite the hype, these efforts did not yield the expected results on the field.
Enter Mike Elko, a coach with a markedly different approach. Elko, who previously served as the defensive coordinator for the Aggies from 2018 to 2021, is known for his quiet confidence and focus on fundamentals. His success at Duke, where he led a remarkable turnaround by winning 16 games in two seasons, showcased his ability to build a program on a foundation of hard work and consistency.
Elko’s return to Texas A&M marked the beginning of a new era. From the start, he emphasized the importance of facing reality and working towards improvement. “We had to have some real, honest conversations when I took over about where we were as a program,” Elko said. “We can’t verbalize what we are, facts tell us who we are. We were a 12-13 football program the last two years. The only way to change that is to work.”
This new direction is rooted in a commitment to quiet competence. Elko’s tenure has been characterized by a lack of flashy media presence and a focus on internal development. His appearance at SEC Media Days was notably low-key, reflecting his preference for substance over style.
“We love silence,” said offensive tackle Trey Zuhn. “We’re just doing our work, grinding every single day so we can put our best foot forward against Notre Dame.”
Elko’s blue-collar background in South Brunswick, New Jersey, aligns well with the values of Texas A&M, a school with deep agricultural roots and a tradition of hard work. Elko doesn’t seek to change the narrative with grand gestures but with steady, persistent effort.
“You earn the right to have success in the game of football,” Elko explained. “The offseason is about being in places where nobody’s watching, where no one’s following you on Instagram, where nobody’s posting about what you’re doing. It’s about getting up every day and going to get better so you can have success in the fall.”
The past few years have shown that hype alone is not enough to ensure success. Despite signing the top recruiting class in 2022, the Aggies struggled, missing their first bowl game since 2008. Many top recruits have since transferred, creating opportunities for those who stayed to step up and prove themselves.
“That’s one thing that Coach Elko prides himself on: work,” said defensive lineman Shemar Turner. “If you work, he’s going to love you.”
As the 2024 season approaches, Texas A&M is content to stay out of the spotlight, focusing instead on internal growth and development. Elko’s approach has allowed the team to hone their skills without the distraction of external expectations. Their season opener against Notre Dame will bring national attention, but the Aggies are prepared to let their hard work shine.
“If you want to get different results, you have to change what you are doing,” Elko said. “I think we have embraced that this offseason.”
In this new era of Texas A&M football, the focus is on building a solid foundation through quiet determination and relentless effort. Elko’s leadership promises a return to fundamentals, where success is earned through hard work and dedication rather than hype and spectacle.
