James Madison stunned North Carolina in a thrilling 70-50 victory that gave the Dukes their biggest win of the Bob Chesney era. In a game filled with explosive plays, JMU set records and left Chapel Hill with an unforgettable result. The Dukes’ 53 first-half points were the most scored in a single half in JMU history and the most ever surrendered by a North Carolina defense.
The game started with fireworks as JMU blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown. North Carolina responded with two touchdowns, briefly taking a 14-11 lead—their only lead of the game. From there, JMU quarterback Alonza Barnett III took over, throwing three touchdown passes and rushing for two more in the first half. The Dukes capped off the half with a 33-yard pick-six by Terrence Spence, his first of two interceptions on the day.
By halftime, JMU led 53-21, with North Carolina’s offense stalling due to three turnovers. UNC made a push in the third quarter, scoring a touchdown and blocking a punt for a quick score, but the 60-38 deficit was too much to overcome.
Barnett finished the day with 388 passing yards and five touchdowns, along with 99 rushing yards and two scores on the ground, breaking the JMU record for total touchdowns in a game with seven. His five touchdown passes went to five different receivers, highlighting the depth of the Dukes’ offense. Meanwhile, JMU’s defense forced five turnovers, including three fumble recoveries and two interceptions.
North Carolina’s offense wasn’t quiet either—quarterback Jacolby Criswell threw for 475 yards and three touchdowns, while running back Omarion Hampton rushed for 139 yards and three scores. UNC actually outgained JMU 616-611 in total offense, but the turnovers proved fatal.
The win pushed JMU to 3-0 on the season, while North Carolina (3-1) suffered its first loss. The Tar Heels now look to regroup as they prepare for a rivalry clash with Duke next week.
