The Bulldogs got their first taste of seeing Jeff Lebby’s offense last Saturday at Davis-Wade Stadium. Here are three snapshot takeaways for MSU fans and others observing MSU.
1. Mississippi State has found their QB
Baylor transfer QB Blake Shapen played lights out. Completing 18-22 passes for 312 yards and three touchdowns. Shapen looked comfortable in the pocket and looked like he could do exactly what Jeff Lebby wants him to do in this offense: score from far.
2. Receivers are dynamic and plentiful
Transfer Wide Receivers Kevin Coleman and Kelly Akharaiyi (or big play Kelly A as we’ve coined him) made huge plays. Coleman and Akharaiyi showed they have tremendous skill sets, both scoring touchdowns and catching contested passes. Freshman Mario Craver also looked ready for primetime as he led all receivers with 95-yards receiving. Tight end Justin Ball caught two touchdown passes and looked poised for a huge season in this offense.
3. The defense might have cause for concern
While it is just a spring game, the defensive secondary had many question marks coming into the game and those questions still linger. The Bulldogs will almost have an entirely new secondary this season. With playing talented QBs going up against the 6th toughest schedule in the nation, the defense will need to be ready to be stout. The offensive tempo for the Bulldogs is fast and furious and it might cause the defense to be low in stamina, so depth will be incredibly important to get in the portal. Jeff Lebby mentioned the Bulldogs will look to the portal to help the secondary.
