Western Kentucky Football has a QB battle on its hands for the starting position for the 2024 season. As of right now, there are a couple front runners for the job. Spring practice has begun and Caden Veltkamp & TJ Finley have separated themselves as the primary options to be QB1.
Caden Veltkamp (r-So) is a 6’6” 235lb local kid from South Warren High School in Bowling Green. You may recognize his name from his epic Famous Toastery Bowl game debut in which he entered the game as QB2, trailing 21-0, and led WKU to an improbable 38-35 OT victory. He finished the game with 383 yards passing (40-52 attempts) with 5 touchdowns & 1 interception. He was named bowl game MVP for his performance. Prior to the game, he had entered the transfer portal & surely garnered a lot of interest with this performance. But, thanks to the efforts of the Red Towel Trust Collective, he opted to return to WKU for the 2024 season.
TJ Finley (r-Jr) is a 6’7” 255lb transfer from Texas State. He is originally from Ponchatoula, La. He committed to LSU as a high school prospect. He spent one season there before transferring to Auburn, where we played for 2 years before joining Texas State. Last season he threw for 3,439 yards with 24 touchdowns and 8 interceptions.
Coach Tyson Helton certainly has one of the biggest QB rooms in the country with these two prospects. Whoever wins this competition will be leading an offense that has proven to be one of the most entertaining & productive in college football over the last 5-10 years.
Replacing NFL-bound Austin Reed won’t be easy, but whoever prevails will certainly have the keys to this Corvette offense. If history holds true, Coach Helton will let this completion play out until well-into fall ball & will make a starter announcement a week or two prior to WKUs Week One matchup in Tuscaloosa vs Alabama on 8/31.
Buckle up Hilltoppers, the 2024 season will be a fun one regardless of who wins this battle!
